The Incheon Declaration is the document that sets the bases of the commitments of what has to be the education the next 15 years. It shows the international commitments for adopting urgent measures for transforming lives through a new vision of education. Unescocat has published the Catalan edition of the whole document: Incheon Declaration and Action Framework for the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goal 4: Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.
In 2015, in the context of the adoption by the United Nations General Assembly of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), UNESCO and six other UN agencies organized the World Education Forum in Incheon, to determine the global priorities on education for the next fifteen years
The Forum was attended by civil society organizations from around the world (among which Unescocat), governments from 160 countries, multilateral organizations and representatives from the world of education. The conclusions were included in the Incheon Education 2030 Declaration, along with a Framework for Action, to “Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all,” as stated in ODS 4.
This is a very relevant Declaration for the wide diversity of drivers and for its high aspiration: “We want to transform lives through a new vision for education, with bold and innovative actions,” it says. And so, “We commit with a sense of urgency to a single, renewed education agenda that is holistic, ambitious and aspirational, leaving no one behind”. The Framework for Action also includes the need for partnerships with civil society to make this possible (§80), such as the Escola Nova 21 Alliance. Among other things, the Declaration establishes the universal values on which education is based (§5), the need for inclusion and equity to be at the center (§7), the necessary educational updating by redefining what we understand by quality (§9) or how to make lifelong learning possible from a 360º logic (§10).
Along with the UNESCO documents Rethinking Education and Education for Sustainable Development Goals, also published in Catalan by Unescocat, the Incheon Declaration Education 2030 is a reference tool for the broad consensus on which to base the work for educational updating in our society.
